Granada at Christmas with kids, plans by age and price

Is Granada good for kids at Christmas? Yes, with two caveats. The Alhambra's festive family workshops are excellent value and free for under-11s, but they run only in Spanish and only for children aged 6 and up. The science museum is the safe all-ages plan, and on Christmas Day and New Year's Day both are shut.

The best-value Christmas plan for children in Granada has one condition that rules it out for many visiting families: the Alhambra’s festive workshops run only in Spanish. In 2025 they cost 7 euros per adult, nothing for children up to 11, and took groups of 20 into towers and gates that stay closed the rest of the year.

Granada at Christmas works for families who plan by age and by date. The Alhambra is free for under-12s every day except 25 December and 1 January, and the Parque de las Ciencias, the city’s science museum, charges nothing for children under 3 and €8.00 for under-18s.

Is Granada good for kids at Christmas? Yes, if you plan around two closing days. On 25 December and 1 January the Alhambra and the Parque de las Ciencias both shut. The rest of the season, under-12s enter the Alhambra free with their own ticket, and the science museum costs €10.00 for adults, €8.00 for under-18s and nothing for under-3s.

Which Christmas plan suits which age in Granada

Each Granada Christmas plan has an age where it works best: the science museum from the start, the Alhambra workshops from 6, the night visit for teenagers. The grid below sets them side by side.

Which Granada Christmas plan suits which age groupThe Parque de las Ciencias suits all ages and is free under 3. The Alhambra family workshops are for ages 6 and up and are free up to 11. The Alhambra day visit is free under 12. The Nasrid Palaces night visit from 20:00 to 21:30 suits teenagers. The Plaza del Carmen light show at 19:00 suits all ages.Best fit by age0 to 56 to 1112 to 17Parque de las CienciasAlhambra family workshopsAlhambra day visitNasrid Palaces at nightLight show at 19:00Dark: best fit. Mid: works. Light: possible. Grey: not suitable or not allowed.
The Parque de las Ciencias and the light show are the only plans that suit every age.

For under-6s the Alhambra day visit is possible but long, and the workshops are closed to them. The 19:00 light and carol show in Plaza del Carmen, the earliest of three daily shows in 2025, is the evening plan that fits a toddler’s bedtime.

Is the Alhambra good for kids at Christmas

The Alhambra is good for kids at Christmas because it costs nothing for children under 12 and opens every day except 25 December and 1 January, from 8:30 to 18:00. Each child still needs a named ticket issued with the adult’s, which costs €22.27, and the timed entry to the Nasrid Palaces applies to the whole family.

The monument closes at 18:00 in winter, so a morning visit leaves the afternoon free. The night visit to the Nasrid Palaces, from 20:00 to 21:30 on winter Fridays and Saturdays at €12.73, suits teenagers better than toddlers, and over the holidays it runs only on Saturdays 26 December and 2 January. The full calendar is in Alhambra opening hours at Christmas, and what each ticket covers in Alhambra ticket types explained.

How the Alhambra family workshops work, and the Spanish-only catch

The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife runs a Christmas programme for families with children aged 6 and up, in two morning slots, 10:00 to 12:30 and 11:00 to 13:30; each session takes 150 minutes. In 2025 there were seven mornings between 22 and 31 December, and the 2026 programme is not yet published.

  • Price. 7 euros for adults and children over 12; free for children up to 11, whose tickets must still be booked with the adults’.
  • Language and size. Spanish only, with a maximum of 20 people per group.
  • Meeting point. The education area of the Casas de las Mimbres, next to the Generalife. Keep your booking QR code on your phone and bring an ID document for every participant.
  • What children do. A plaster workshop where each child makes and keeps a piece, a tour of the four outer Nasrid gates, a hunt for stars in the decoration, and visits to spaces normally closed such as the Torre de las Infantas and the Torre de la Cautiva.
  • Refunds. None, unless the Patronato itself cancels.

For a family that speaks some Spanish this is the standout plan of the season, with the plaster workshop as the pick for younger children. For one that does not, a two-and-a-half-hour talk in Spanish is a long morning for a 6-year-old.

Why the Parque de las Ciencias is the best plan for rain and all ages

The Parque de las Ciencias is Granada’s science museum and the indoor plan for the 7.4 rainy days of an average December. It sits on the Avenida de la Ciencia, 350 metres from Alcázar Genil metro station, and a single ticket on Metro de Granada costs €1.35.

Museum€10.00€8.00free
BioDomo added to museum€7.00€6.00free
Planetarium added to museum€3.50€3.50n/a

A family of two adults and two children aged 7 and 10 pays €36.00 for the museum, or €50.00 adding the Planetarium. The children’s club, Club Infantil La Banda, gives members aged 0 to 14 free museum entry, but not the BioDomo or the Planetarium.

Watch the holiday calendar. The museum opens from 10:00 to 15:00 on 24 and 31 December and on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December, closes on Mondays 14, 21 and 28 December, and shuts on 25 December and 1 and 6 January.

What to do with kids on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day

On 25 December and 1 January the Alhambra, Granada Cathedral and the Parque de las Ciencias all close, so the family day is outdoors. A simple order for the day:

  1. Morning up the hill. Ride the C31 or C32 minibus to the Mirador de San Nicolás, which charges nothing and has a stop 44 metres away.
  2. Walk down through the Albaicín to Plaza Nueva, downhill all the way.
  3. Evening lights. In 2025 the centre lit up from 18:30, and the Plaza del Carmen show began at 19:00.

Both days fall on a Friday this season, and both are followed by a Saturday when everything reopens: the science museum from 10:00 to 19:00 on 26 December, and again on 2 January. Day-by-day openings for the whole season are in Granada at Christmas, what is open.

When Spanish children get presents, Three Kings not Santa

Spanish children traditionally get their main presents on the morning of 6 January from the Three Kings, not on 25 December. In Granada the Three Kings parade crosses the city on the evening of Tuesday 5 January, and 6 January is a public holiday.

That shifts a family trip: the big night for children is the 5th, not the 24th. On the 6th the Parque de las Ciencias closes and the Alhambra opens from 8:30 to 18:00. The ring-shaped roscón de Reyes eaten that morning is covered in Granada Christmas sweets.

Where Inverland and the Ferris wheel are

Inverland is the Christmas fairground on the Paseo del Salón, which in 2025 spread for the first time onto the Paseo del Violón and added a Ferris wheel by the Palacio de Congresos. Its rides publish no prices in advance.

The Ferris wheel is 363 metres from Alcázar Genil metro, the same station as the science museum, so the two make one afternoon. The lights route through the centre is in Granada Christmas lights, and the weather to dress for in Granada in December.

Frequently asked questions about Granada at Christmas with kids

Is the Alhambra free for children?

Yes, for under-12s. Children under 12 enter the Alhambra free, but each one needs a ticket issued together with the paying adult’s. The adult general ticket costs €22.27, so a family of two adults and two young children pays €44.54 for a full day visit.

Are there Christmas activities for kids in English in Granada?

Not at the Alhambra. The Patronato’s Christmas family workshops run only in Spanish, for children aged 6 and up. Plans that do not rely on a guided talk work in any language: the Parque de las Ciencias galleries, the Inverland fairground on the Paseo del Salón and the light show in Plaza del Carmen.

Is the Parque de las Ciencias open at Christmas?

Yes, except on 25 December and 1 and 6 January. On 24 and 31 December it opens from 10:00 to 15:00, and it is closed on Mondays 14, 21 and 28 December. Otherwise it keeps its usual hours, 10:00 to 19:00 from Tuesday to Saturday and 10:00 to 15:00 on Sundays.

When do Spanish children get their Christmas presents?

Mostly on the morning of 6 January, brought by the Three Kings. In Granada the Three Kings parade crosses the city on the evening of Tuesday 5 January, and 6 January is a public holiday. The Parque de las Ciencias closes that day, while the Alhambra opens from 8:30 to 18:00.

With children in Granada, the calendar matters more than the city: plan around the 25th, the 1st and the 5th.
