Granada Christmas concerts, zambombas and Handel’s Messiah

Looking for Christmas concerts in Granada? The one you will not hear at home is a zambomba, Andalusia’s flamenco carol party, staged in a Sacromonte hall for 13 euros on two December weekends. Handel’s Messiah costs from 18 euros and bars under-6s. Tickets sell online through a Spanish site, and a seat costs the same in the stalls and the balcony at the zambomba.

Most visitors never see the Christmas music Granada does best, because it happens up a hill behind the Alhambra at 20:30 on two weekends in early December. The La Chumbera hall in the Sacromonte stages four flamenco carol nights there, for less than the price of a main course in the Albaicín.

If your trip falls later, the choice shifts down to the Manuel de Falla Auditorium, a 64-metre walk from the C30 and C32 minibus stop, and to the Palacio de Congresos, 378 metres from Alcázar Genil metro. Prices run from 5 euros for a child at the carols to 77 euros for a front seat at Diego El Cigala.

Are Christmas concerts in Granada worth planning a trip around? Only if you are already coming in December. The season runs from 4 December to 7 January, with no music in the main halls from 24 to 26 December. Choose by date first: early December for flamenco, the week of 17 December for choral music, after Christmas for big band and ballet.

Which nights have Christmas concerts in Granada

Christmas music in Granada follows the calendar more than the venue: flamenco comes first, choral music in the middle, and lighter shows after the 25th. A visitor staying for the December long weekend, 5 to 8 December, gets one zambomba and one ballet, and someone arriving on the 23rd gets gospel but not Messiah.

Nothing is on sale in these three halls from 24 to 26 December, so Christmas itself is a quiet night for music.

What a zambomba is and why it is the one to see

A zambomba is a seated flamenco show of Christmas carols here, not a street party, and it is the one concert you cannot easily see outside Andalusia. La Chumbera has four nights: Graná canta por Pascua, De la Zambra a Belén, Zambomba de los Heredia and Panderetá Cantes de Pascua, all at 20:30 for 13 euros.

No Spanish is needed to enjoy the rhythm, though the lyrics are all in Spanish. The hall is on Camino del Sacromonte 107, with the C34 minibus 82 metres away; for a late return, a taxi saves the wait. Anyone wanting a dinner-and-show tablao should look elsewhere, since this is a seated concert.

The bigger, costlier option is Así canta Jerez en Navidad at the Palacio de Congresos on Sunday 20 December, at 18:00 or 21:30, from 35.20 to 40.70 euros. It is close to the end of the Christmas lights walk, so the early session leaves the evening free.

Handel’s Messiah in Granada, and who should book it

The Orquesta Ciudad de Granada plays Handel’s Messiah on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 December at 19:30, with Mhairi Lawson, Bethany Horak-Hallet, Joshua Ellicott and Peter Edge as soloists, plus amateur choirs that join its own. For English speakers it has an obvious appeal: Handel set the text in English.

Seats cost 32 euros in the stalls, 27 and 24 in the two middle sections and 18 in the rear section, Sala B. Anyone under 30 can try for a 3-euro Sala B seat from half an hour before, sold only at the Falla box office, if any remain. Doors open 30 minutes ahead and latecomers are held until a break.

Gospel, a Bublé tribute, ballet or Spanish flamenco royalty

Alabama Gospel Choir brings 20 singers to the Falla hall on Wednesday 23 December at 19:30, from spirituals to Oh Happy Day, for 49.35 euros or 45.15 in Sala B. It is the easiest night here for a mixed group of adults, since no language or flamenco background is needed.

The Bublé Christmas Tribute with the Red Velvet Big Band follows on Sunday 27 December at 18:30, at 44.10 to 54.60 euros. Diego El Cigala is the serious choice for flamenco fans: Monday 28 December at 20:30 in the Palacio de Congresos, 66 euros in the balcony and 77 in the stalls.

For ballet, La Bella Durmiente plays on 30 December at 20:00, lasting 2 hours 15 minutes, from 36.30 to 42.90 euros, and the New Year Concert on Saturday 2 January at 19:00 is 25 euros anywhere in the hall. That start clashes with the Alhambra night visit on 2 January, so pick one.

Which concert suits children, and which does not

Families should start with the carols on Friday 11 December at the Falla hall, at 18:00 or 20:00: 10 euros, or 5 under 6, with children’s choirs singing in eight languages. Age limits elsewhere are stricter than most visitors expect, and two big shows turn under-6s away at the door. More ideas are in Christmas in Granada with kids.

Gospel and big band are open to all ages but every child needs a ticket. The zambomba has one flat price. How to get to the concert halls without a car

Two of the three halls sit on hills with no metro, and both can be reached by minibus: La Chumbera on the C34, the Falla hall on the C30 and C32. The Palacio de Congresos is the easy one, 378 metres from the metro and on the 4 and 21 bus lines.

How to buy tickets and what to book first

Buy on redentradas.com, or by phone on +34 958 108 181 from Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 14:00. In town, the office is at Ancha de la Virgen 27 and the Teatro Isabel la Católica box office is on Acera del Casino. Pick your date first, because on the holidays when much of Granada closes the concert may be your only evening plan.

Spanish evenings run late, so concerts at 19:30 still leave time to eat afterwards: Chikito on Plaza del Campillo serves until 23:30, and a single city bus ticket costs 1.60 euros. Book the zambomba as soon as your flights are fixed.

Frequently asked questions about Christmas concerts in Granada

What is a zambomba in Granada?

A zambomba is a flamenco Christmas gathering built around carols, clapping and a friction drum of the same name. In Granada, the La Chumbera hall in the Sacromonte stages four of them in December 2026, at 20:30 on the 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th, for 13 euros a seat.

Can I buy Granada concert tickets in English from abroad?

Tickets are sold on redentradas.com, a Spanish site, and by phone on +34 958 108 181 from Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 14:00. The Manuel de Falla box office opens one hour before each concert, but the Messiah and the gospel night are safer bought before you travel.

Is there live music in Granada on Christmas Day?

Not in the main halls. Nothing is on sale at La Chumbera, the Manuel de Falla Auditorium or the Palacio de Congresos from 24 to 26 December. Music returns on Sunday 27 December at 18:30 with a Michael Bublé tribute and the Red Velvet Big Band, from 44.10 euros.

Can children go to the Messiah in Granada?

Not under-6s. The Orquesta Ciudad de Granada admits under-6s only at its family concerts, such as the carols on 11 December at 10 euros, or 5 euros under 6. Latecomers wait outside until a break, so Messiah suits older children who can sit still at 19:30.
